The
Studio
The Carwile-Dodson Studio,
opened in April 2004, is located in a renovated mill building next door
to Mud Dabbers Pottery & Crafts. Both buildings were built in
1922. The studio is equipped with nine electric wheels, one being a
handicap-accessible wheel. Hand-building equipment includes a slab
roller and two extruders. Stoneware clay will be used in the classes;
it will be fired in an electric oxidation kiln to cone 6.

Course Schedule
Whether
you are a beginner or an experienced potter, our classes are designed for
everyone. Experienced instructors will work with you to reach
individual goals.
Registration is required.
A
50% deposit is required at the time of registration to hold a space in
extended classes, workshops and summer camps.
Three-Week
Courses
Introduction to Raku
with Rick Compton and Amy Biamonte
This three-week class runs from October 15 – November 13.
Class meets Fridays for instruction (I) and Wednesdays for practice (P),
both from 6-9pm.
Class will meet for two weeks of making (10/15 I, 10/20 P, 10/22 I, 10/27 P),
then we will take a short break to process, followed by finishing up with
making glazes and application techniques on Wednesday, November 10th
and an all day firing on Saturday, November 13th from 11
a.m.-? Participants will get hands on experience with the Raku process
and have the opportunity to create pieces to experiment with using both
wheel-throwing and hand-building techniques.
All levels of experience welcome.
Minimum number of participants: 5.
Throwing Sectionals
with John Dodson
This three-week class runs from November 1- 17.
Class meets Mondays for instruction and Wednesdays for
practice both from 6-9 p.m.
Create bigger forms by using a little fire and throwing in
sections. Participants will learn how to speed dry sectional pieces
with blowtorches/heat guns and attach them to create large vessels. The
ability to center is a must for this class.
This is an intermediate level class.

Independent Study
with Rick Compton
Three-week session runs from October 31 – November 18
This course is open to former Carwile-Dodson Studio students who have
completed a six-week or three-week course with instructor approval.
This is a non-instructional studio time for experienced students to continue
creating with clay. Students participating in the Independent Study
Studio Time will be allowed to use the studio two days a week.
Thursdays from 6 - 9 p.m., and Sundays from 2-6 p.m. The studio
will only process ware created on the premises.

Courses
Personalized
Planters
with Mary Murray
This Four-Week Class will run from September 7 through October 1.
Class meets Tuesdays for instruction and Fridays for practice, both from
6-9 p.m.
This is This is a great class for plant enthusiasts who want to create
personalized planters out of low fire earthenware clay, which is known for
its ability to both wick and store excess water. Students will be
taught how to construct specialty planters for orchids, bonsai trees and
herbs. They also will learn how to make and apply terra-sigillata as a
surface treatment.
All experience levels welcome.

Making
Molds and Forms
with Wendy Elwell
This four-week class runs from October 26 – November 19.
Class meets Tuesdays for instruction and Fridays for practice,
both from 6-9 p.m.
In this class students will learn how to make personalized
drape and press molds using Styrofoam. The molds can be used to
duplicate the forms multiple times with one of-a-kind decorating
possibilities. They last for years of use and variations can come from
the forms made on them. They are lightweight and store easily. Texture
and surface possibilities will be discussed and explored and students will
have the opportunity to use their own molds to create one-of-a kind
hand-built treasures. In this class students will gain the personal
knowledge that they need to continue creating forms and molds at home with a
simple supply list and some hands-on-experience.
All levels of experience welcome.

Independent Study
with Rick Compton
Six-week session runs from September 12 – October 21
This course is open to former Carwile-Dodson Studio students who have
completed a six-week or three-week course with instructor approval.
This is a non-instructional studio time for experienced students to continue
creating with clay. Students participating in the Independent Study
Studio Time will be allowed to use the studio two days a week.
Thursdays from 6 - 9 p.m., and Sundays from 2-6 p.m. The studio
will only process ware created on the premises.
Introduction to
Wheel Throwing
with John Dodson
This Six-Week Class runs from September 13 through October 20.
Class meets Mondays for instruction and on Wednesdays for practice, both
from 6 – 9 p.m.
In this class students will learn about the properties of clay and
beginning wheel- throwing techniques. Students will learn how to
transform basic cylinders into bowls, vases and cups. Pulling and
attaching handles also will be discussed. Students will learn glazing
basics and will glaze their own work.
All experience levels welcome.

Pottery
created during the One-Time Classes will be available for pick up in three
weeks. The cost of these classes includes clay, glazing, firing, and
processing. We
do our best to take care of pottery as it goes through its journey.
However, even experienced potters lose pieces in the process.
Shipping is available for one-time classes for an additional
cost. There is a $5 handling fee (per participant) plus the cost of
shipping.
Private Parties – Reunions – Group Outings
Hold a
pottery party, organize a fun family outing or gather a group of friends at
our studio. We will provide an instructor and all the materials.
You provide the theme, celebration and the participants. We can
customize classes to meet your specific needs and interests. Time, date and
cost (depending on number of participants, type of project(s), and length of
time) to be arranged. Fun for children and adults alike!

Please notify the studio at least a week in advance so arrangements can be
made.
There is a two-hour minimum per session or party.
Private Instruction Rates:
1 to 2 people- $35 per hour (each).

*Clay is NOT included in the cost of extended classes.
A 25-pound bag can be purchased by students for a $20 fee. This fee
includes the cost of glazing, processing and firing at our facility.
Clay sales are for students only. We do not process ware made off the
premises. Community tools are available in the studio for student
use. Personal tool kits can be purchased for $14.
A 50%
registration fee is required to reserve a space in any extended class,
workshop or summer camp.

Amy
Biamonte
is our administrative manager. She is a potter/artist and a former Transylvania
County educator with a Master of Arts in Teaching
from Towson University.
She also has taken classes at Odyssey Center
for Ceramic Arts and John C.
Campbell Folk School.
Denise
Byrd
is a potter/artist and studio apprentice. She majored in art and lives
life creatively.
Rick
Compton
is our facility manager and our very own “Jack of all Trades.” He
has over a decade of experience in the field of research and development
at Mother Earth News and has dabbled in everything from woodworking to
plumbing.
John
E. Dodson
is a second generation potter whose work ethic and style have been influenced
by his father, John O. Dodson and Georgia traditional potter, D.X.
Gordy. He has taken classes at Arrowmont School
of Crafts, Odyssey Center
for Ceramic Arts and John C.
Campbell Folk School,
where he teaches regularly.
Wendy
Elwell
has bachelors degrees in sculpture and ceramics, with minors in drawing and
design from Western Michigan University, and a masters in education with an
emphasis in ceramics and art history from Illinois
State University and
WMU. She has taught high school arts and crafts and has operated
BernWell Pottery with husband, Dennis Bern, in Etowah. Wendy, now
retired, enjoys teaching workshops and classes.
Ali
Holroyd Lien
is a studio apprentice and has been playing in the clay for over four
years. She has a Masters Degree in Education from Prescott
University and teaches Wilderness Leadership and
Experiential Education at Bevard
College.
Mary
W. Murray
has been a production potter in Transylvania
County since 1978. She studied art at Brevard
College, attended the Atlanta
School of Art, and has taken classes at Arrowmont
School of Crafts. Mary also has taught
pottery at Brevard College.
Kim Skeen is a
studio apprentice. She has a BS from Appalachian State in Experiential
Education and has been working with children for over a decade.
